The Newbiggin Life Masterplan

Spaces into Places for Central Park
Vibrant modern plans are set to develop open space at Collingwood playing fields with improved facilities. Used in recent years for fly tipping and a focal point for anti-social behaviour, the area is a resident priority for change.

Residents are working with Newbiggin Life to develop plans to transform the whole site with new sports facilities, parkland and the restoration of Memorial Park to its former glory. A cycle path and pedestrian link to the eagerly awaited Experience Northumberland at Woodhorn development and Queen Elizabeth 2 park will provide a vital link to adjacent settlements and facilities.

Woodlea Field Environmental Improvements
Working with Northumberland County Council and Greening for Growth, residents and children from Moorside First School, Newbiggin Life and landscaping consultants are working up plans for environmental improvements to a field in the east of the village. Of no purpose at present the field is subject to fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, and is located within the heart of the village. Scheduled to commence work this financial year, residents are looking forward to transforming this area and bringing it back into beneficial community use.

Gateway Improvements - Spittal Farm
After the success of the gateway improvements to Woodhorn Road, residents are keen to see similar improvements to the other main village entrance. Residents are currently working up plans with Newbiggin Life and Casella Stanger Architects for a gateway entrance feature to this side of the village, plans are also being developed to extend both gateway schemes into the village centre.

The plan approved by the shadow board in September has earmarked residential areas for improvements. This is in addition to new housing developments which will bring derelict land back into beneficial use.

There are also proposals for modernisation work in Newbiggin village centre, balanced with plans for the extension of the caravan park and the heritage centre.

Environmental improvements to create a Central Park in the heart of the village will help provide safer pedestrian linkage and routes to school, complemented by designs for a community farm and plans to reclaim former industrial land that is no longer required.

Wider plans encapsulate areas for general improvements such as urban forestry in the outskirts of the village. A seaside strategy including investment in the reinforcement of coastal defences, protecting and recharging the beach will stimulate the leisure and working potential of the bay.

Commercial opportunities for the village have also been considered through the proposals for industrial and business incubator units and leisure facilities.

Four gateway locations for the permanent display of public art works will improve the image of the village and help raise its profile.
