How the Gateway came to pass...

The gateway entrance feature was an original idea by Gordon Burns,
a resident of the village.

The landmark feature encapsulates a coal mining and seaside theme set in striking stonework. It was designed and agreed by a working group of local residents with the help of Casella Stanger Architects and Newbiggin Life.

The feature is complemented with semi-mature trees, dense shrub planting and turf along Woodhorn Road, a new footpath, street lighting, road safety improvements, better drainage and a new bus shelter. The gateway svheme has helped to attract over £12m of public and private sector investment. Over £400,000 has been invested in this initial phase of the project, with all of the environmental improvements and the gateway itself providing an attractive welcome for residents, tourists and investors.

The construction of the gateway is strategically important and is vital in helping to trigger the investment the village needs and deserves. The project has been possible thanks to funding and partnerships with One North East, Northumberland Strategic Partnership, Lotteries New Opportunities Fund, European Regional Development Fund, and Greening for Growth.
