Kids
encourage to go SPLAAT!!
With the new housing
rapidly springing up in the village and more construction work on the
way in coming years. Newbiggin Life has been helping local schoolchildren
to understand the dangers of local building sites, encouraging them to
steer clear and play safe.
In partnership with
Cheviot Housing Association and Grainger Homes, we've visited the children
at Moorside and Windsor First Schools and shown them the highly popular
Laing Homes SPLAAT (Safe Play At All Times)) presentation.
We've also taken groups
round local building sites to show them at first hand the potential pitfalls
and give them a first taste of health and safety issues.
The presentation tells
the children exactly why they should never play on or nearby building
sites, guiding them through the dangers of machinery, building materials
and chemicals and explaining situations where they might fall or get trapped.
As well as encouraging children to always stick to safe places to play,
there is an educational introduction showing how adults must keep themselves
safe when working on sites.
Building site safety
has never been as important in Newbiggin as it is now. We see this as
a really valuable way of educating local children about the dangers of
building sites. Many youngsters from the village are not used to building
sites and with new homes beginning to appear in their neighbourhood, they
need to know of the dangers and how to protect themselves by staying clear
and playing it safe.
