Central Park gets Green Light...

Vibrant, modern plans to develop a Central Park in the heart of the village have been given the green light by funders. Over £400, 000 has been earmarked to help turn Collingwood Playing Fields into a Central Park.

Residents that attended Newbiggin Lifes consultation events highlighted this area as a priority for regeneration. In the past the land has been has been used for fly tipping and in recent years has been a focal point for anti social behaviour.

Funding from Northumberland County Council, Northumberland Strategic Partnership and One North East will meet the cost of transforming the Narrow Path into a formal footpath and cycle path with lighting and landscaping boundary improvements.

In addition Newbiggin Life's youth focus group is working with Newbiggin Life and the Inspire Project devising creative projects for throughout the park. Work will commence on site this year with the footpath and cycle path due for completion in 2007.

"It's been clear to us from the outset that residents want to do something proactive with this land," said Newbiggin Life Project Manager Roberta Buchanan. "That's been reflected by so many people turning out for the meetings and giving us their input and views."

"We've gone for a creative approach to transform a space into a meaningful place of which I am sure residents will be proud".

Newbiggin by the Sea Community Area Partnership Chairman Mike Goodman : "The masterplan for the future of the village is really becoming a reality. The improvement and transformation of the Collingwood site is a central priority for us and will help change the face of the village for the better."
