Village to get its beach back!
Newbiggin is riding the wave of success with a multi million pound scheme to improve sea defences been given the green light.
It is hoped that the £10.5 million project will boost regeneration within the village. As part of the innovative scheme Defra has now told Wansbeck Council that it is prepared to build a 260m long breakwater across Newbiggin bay to reduce wave pawer and erosion along the seafront.
In addition, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand will be imported to Newbiggin to replenish the beach - lost for more than two decades because of coastal erosion.
Construction is expected to start in spring 2007.
