New homes in Newbiggin
The regeneration of the village continues to pick up pace with plans for new homes in Cumberland Avenue.
Cheviot Housing Association in partnership with the Housing Corporation will commence building on the £2.2 million project to construct 14 rental properties and six shared ownership homes in February.
The scheme earmarked to be called William Hopkinson Way, after the second life boat at Newbiggin, will comprise of a mix of two bedroom bungalows, three bedroom bungalows and three and four bedroom homes and is part of the Newbiggin Life (local initiative for everyone) project, which is designed to breathe new life into the area.
Due to be completed in the Autumn, Cheviot Housing Association will implement a local sales policy, releasing the six shared ownership homes for sale early to purchasers with a local connection to the village.
John Johnston, Initiative Director for Newbiggin Life, said: ìOur aim is to provide new living, employment and environmental opportunities in the village, restoring community confidence and kick starting the local economy.
"Providing a mix of new homes ñ including some for rent and part ownership ñ is vital to the initiative and we are delighted to see work underway at Cumberland Avenue. Having the new homes available for local people is an important component of the masterplan. It will ensure that the people of Newbiggin benefit from the investment coming into the village."
