Newbiggin Learning Initiative

The second year of the Initiative ended on 31 July 2004 with approximately 100 learners taking part. The learners have undertaken a range of courses, from IT courses to An Introduction to Beauty Therapy. A number of learners also sat the new National Tests in Literacy and Numeracy, and have gained qualifications at levels I and II.

A presentation event took place in Newbiggin Leisure Centre at the end of July, with over 50 people in attendance.

Funding has been confirmed for phase 3 of the project, and a range of activities will take place over the coming year. There is a large demand for computer courses, with classes being provided by Northumberland College and Hirst High School Community Association. The WomenÕs Health Advice Centre are offering An Introduction to Complimentary Therapies, with follow up courses planned, and Wansbeck Toy Library are working with Kidz Avenue, to offer Learn Through Play sessions to parents and children.

Learning Advocates

An important theme of the Newbiggin Learning Initiative is to recruit Learning Advocates to assist with anything from publicising opportunities, to accompanying learners on their first visit to the course venue, or sitting with learners and helping them participate in classes.

A five-day training package has been developed to support learning advocates, and this will run for one day per week, over five weeks. The training will be held in local venues in the village, and will be held to meet demand for the course. If you are interested in becoming a Learning Advocate, please contact Helen Shand.

Training for Voluntary and Community Groups

This year there will be a new strand to the project, aimed at addressing the training needs of staff working within the voluntary sector. We are currently trying to find out exactly what the needs are, to enable us to arrange training courses. If you are involved with a voluntary or community organisation, and you have unmet training needs please contact Helen.

Childcare and travel expenses are available to assist people to attend classes and courses.

If you would like any further information on any aspect of the Newbiggin Learning Initiative, or you would like to book a place on a course, please contact Helen Shand, Neighbourhood Learning Co-ordinator, on 01670 858688.
