Achievements speak for themselves!
That’s the view of everyone associated with LIFE as it approaches the third anniversary of its launch as a groundbreaking initiative to kick-start a programme of regeneration and revitalisation in the village.
Since then a multi-million pound investment package has been secured for Newbiggin, including the £10m Defra grant for the Bay project.
What else has LIFE achieved for Newbiggin:-
• £6.5m investment by Grainger Homes in the 64 Woodhorn Farm properties, the first private houses built for sale in Newbiggin in more than 20 years
• £3m spent by Cheviot Housing on 10 new homes for rent at Latimer Way, and 14 rented and six shared-ownership properties at Cumberland Avenue
• £400,000 building the Woodhorn Road ‘Gateway’ feature
• £175,000 refurbishing Memorial Park, memorably opened by the Duke of Kent
• £150,000 on improvements at Memorial Square
• £390,000 on infrastructure improvements across Newbiggin
• £400,000 for the creation of Central Park
• £3m constructing the autism centre at Alexandra Park
• £5m on new homes just announced as part of the Woodhorn Road development
• £4.5m investment on 45 homes at the Barratt Carrs development on Manley’s Field
Funding has come from the European Regional Development Fund, the Single Regeneration Budget, the national lottery, the Housing Corporation, Cheviot Housing Association, the Wansbeck Initiative Safer Greener Cleaner fund, the Local Transport Plan, regional development agency One NorthEast and the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Newbiggin’s CAP chair Mike Goodman said the success of LIFE achievements throughout the village over the past three years ‘speak for themselves’. He added: “The LIFE programme has transformed quite literally transformed the fortunes of Newbiggin in such a short space of time.”
Councillor David Nicholson, Chair of Newbiggin Life, says of the latest housing plans: The new investment proves the benefit of the strategic plans developed by the LIFE initiative. Those plans, together with the success of previous projects, are being recognised and acknowledged by Government agencies, who are supporting the vision of LIFE for the village.”
