Flower Power

The award winning Newbiggin in Bloom Association is planning this year’s eye catching displays and is seeking volunteers to make the village a blaze of colour this summer.

“We are constantly looking for volunteers, funders and sponsorship and would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in getting involved,” said Secretary, Lorna Anderson.

“Businesses can support our work through a range of activities including sponsoring flower beds, donating towards the purchase of plants and tools and maintaining floral displays such as hanging baskets and privately-owned beds. Individuals can help by becoming a member of the association and getting involved in projects in whatever way possible. We will be consulting widely to ensure that our projects best reflect the needs of the village.”

The annual general meeting is on Thursday 22nd March at 7pm in the Black Pearl pub function room. Guest speaker
will be Sue Gill from the NCCPG and AGS.

The Newbiggin in Bloom Association has been involved in a number of village horticultural projects since its formation in December 2005. These include the Bank House Social Club rose beds, St. Andrews Methodist Church display, Moorside First School tree planting and wildflower garden and the provision of hanging baskets throughout Newbiggin High Street.

Its partnership with Wansbeck District Council was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Silver Gilt standard in the 2006 Northumbria in Bloom competition. This accolade, along with 4 other awards received in the same competition, is credit to the work of all those involved.

The Association is a not-for-profit organisation and relies upon donations to sustain projects throughout the village.
Donations have been received from the Chamber of Trade, Wansbeck CVS, Cheviot Housing, Bank House Social
Club and from various fundraising.
