Busy time for Heritage volunteers

Heritage Partnership volunteers are already gearing up for a busy summer with the bay restoration and beach recharge expected to attract many more visitors to Newbiggin.

Opening times at the existing centre will be extended as the plans for a new, purpose built venue, continue apace.

Following a successful educational venture with University of Northumbria, a shortlist of ten design concepts made it to public consultation through which the community selected the proposal of Charlotte Simpson.

Said Partnership Secretary, Richard Martin: “Support has come from all over the country and abroad with donations in many ways for which we are always very grateful. One couple from Guildford visited Newbiggin in the autumn and donated a splendid model of Newbiggin’s fourth lifeboat ‘Robert and Susan’ which is a fantastic addition to our collection.”

Local artist Mike Smith of Whitley Bay has also donated an original painting of Mary Joicey at sea and copies of this dramatic picture are available to raise funds. He is working on another picture to be unveiled this summer.

Work on the boat continues at a good pace with major repairs to the carriage now completed so that the lifeboat can be easily moved and painting inside the lifeboat is also underway.

Anyone wishing to be part of this project in anyway will be welcomed. Please contact Richard Martin on 0191-219 2553. Finally, volunteers will be out on Sunday 25th March to carry out the first beach clean of the year, starting at 10.00am at the Lifeboat Station.
