A public exhibition is to be staged at Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre between 10.30am and 7.30pm, Tuesday 13th March, at which representatives from the council, the contractor and the supervising consultant engineers will be on hand to talk with visitors and explain the process.
During construction, close liaison will take place with local residents regarding planned operations and formal public viewing areas will be provided at a number of vantage points at which information boards will be sited, covering current and planned activities.
In addition to the breakwater and beach recharge, a number of additional improvements will be carried out along the promenade. These will include a new improved play area at Church Point, environmental improvement schemes at Vernon
Place and the former boat compound at the southern end of the promenade, a new feature stair access in the centre of bay, and a number of raised viewing platforms behind the rear of the existing flood defences.
The current timetable is:
• Preliminary work will begin in March with the setting up of equipment and compound areas.
• The 15 week breakwater construction period is from 2nd April – 20th July.
• Placement of the sculpture will be around the 12th July.
• The five week beach recharge is from the 15th May – 20th June.
• The Landscaping work will continue throughout the construction period ending with the reopening of the new Children’s playground in September.
• All work is planned to be complete by the 21st September.
