Pioneering centre opens in Newbiggin

Newbiggin is now home to a groundbreaking new centre for the support of young people with autism.

Alexandra Court comprises 28, single person, semi detached cottage style homes in which the young people will, with the help of 24 hour support, be encouraged to live as independently as possible.

The project, the first of its kind in the country, is being driven by Acaena, a specialist company pioneering the treatment of autism in the UK. Chief Executive, Elizabeth Madden, said: “We are seeking to create a lifestyle for these young adults in surroundings which will help them manage the changes within their lives at a crucial time in their development.” Meticulous attention has been paid to every detail of the centre– built in a seven acre site and
centred around a sensory garden designed to create an air of serenity and tranquillity at Alexandra Park.

There will also be a large resource and learning centre providing training in life and integration skills as well as subjects such as IT, art and crafts, catering, music and horticulture, in a safe and secure environment.

However the thrust of the project is integration and the project is expected to contribute significantly to the regeneration of the village, creating dozens of jobs and bringing residents’ families and friends to Newbiggin for visits.
