Woodhorn Road homes
Planning permission has just been granted for the second phase of a £5m housing development at Woodhorn Road, Newbiggin.
The Council is making land it owns at the former Colliery Estate where properties have been demolished, available for the
construction of 48 homes for rent, shared ownership or outright sale.
The land is behind Latimer Way just off Store Farm Road. Cheviot Housing Association will build half of the new homes – 16 for rent and eight for share ownership – as a mixture of two bedroom bungalows, three and four bedroom semi-detached properties.
For the first time properties will be available under a Homebuy scheme, the new name for shared ownership which allows people to buy a 50 per cent share in their homes and pay rent on the remaining half.
Initially Wansbeck Council will have 75 per cent nomination rights for the rented properties, and 50 per cent thereafter. The remaining 24 properties will be built by Pathway homes who are proposing a mix of two and three bedroom semi-detached
and linked terraces of three or four houses.
Work on the site is excepted to begin later this month with the first properties becoming available in just over 12 months time.
* An open day when plans for the development will be outlined, is being held on April 18th from 1pm to 7pm at Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre. Meanwhile anyone interested in the properties, should contact Cheviot Housing by telephoning 0191 238 3800
Bills Heads, Chief Executive of the Cheviot Housing Association, added:
We are involved in the formation as well as the ongoing work of the LIFE initiative, and we are delighted to be able to continue to support the successful regeneration of Newbiggin. This is the third social housing scheme we have funded over the past three years for the benefit of local people, and we are committed to continuing this successful LIFE partnership for
many years to come. ”
